WSOP 2024 Main Event

The WSOP Main Event is the $10,000 buy-in crown jewel of the series. In 2023, it set a very high bar, setting attendance, prize pool, and first-place prize records. So, there were big expectations for the 2024 tournament.

In the end, the 2024 Main Event exceeded all expectations, breaking the 2023 attendance record and becoming the largest-ever Main Event in WSOP history, attracting 10,112 players. It also posted the largest-ever prize pool, just over $94 million.

However, because of the changes to the payout structure, Jonathan Tamayo, the eventual winner, picked up $10,000,000, so the record for the largest payout that was set in 2023 was not broken.

WSOP 2024 Event Highlights

New Events Introduced in 2024

There were over a dozen new events for players to get excited about for the 2024 World Series of Poker. The events differed in range and scope and came with a wide range of buy-ins — from a $500 WSOP Kickoff Freezeout to a $10,000 Eight Game Mixed 6-Handed Championship.

WSOP Event #1: $5,000 Champions Reunion Freezeout

2023 Main Event winner Daniel Weinman plus former WSOP Main Event champions kicked off the 2024 series with this brand new event. The event featured a $5,000 buy-in and any player to knock out a former Main event champion got an automatic entry into the 2024 Main Event. All living Main Event champions were given a free entry to play in this event.

WSOP Event #65: Seniors High Roller No-Limit Hold’em

For the first time at the WSOP, players aged 50 years and up could participate in an exclusive new high roller event. The three-day event featured a $5,000 buy-in and 50,000 starting stack.

WSOP Event #41: Mixed No-Limit Hold’em; Pot-Limit Omaha Double Board Bomb Pot (8 Handed)

Taking place over three days, the buy-in for this event was $1,500 with a starting stack of 25,000.

WSOP Event #62: PokerNews Deep Stack Championship No-Limit Hold’em

PokerNews sponsored the $600 deep stack championship and offered special promotions to low-stakes grinders. In addition, players who participated in the daily $200, $250, or $400 deep stack tournaments at the WSOP earned points and climbed weekly leaderboards. The top 10 finishers each week were given complimentary seats into the $600 PokerNews Deep Stack Championship event.

WSOP Event #80: Independence Day Celebration No-Limit Hold’em

This was a new three-day event at the WSOP. Flight A started ahead of Independence Day on Wednesday, July 3, and Flight B began on Thursday, July 4. Both flights featured $800 buy-ins and a starting stack of 40,000.

WSOP Event #82: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em During Main Event

There was a $1,000 buy-in Hold’em event at 7:00 p.m the night of Flight 1D of the Main Event. The two-day event offered a starting stack of 20,000.

WSOP Event #89: $3,000 Mid-Stakes Championship No-Limit Hold’em

For players who busted out of the Main Event but wanted to remain a part of the action, this new four-day event kicked off on July 11 with a $3,000 buy-in and a starting stack of 40,000.

WSOP Standout Events

Although undoubtedly the Main Event stands as the flagship attraction of the series, the WSOP would feel incomplete without its timeless classics like the Millionaire Maker, Colossus, and Monster Stack, alongside recent sensations like Mystery Millions and Gladiators of Poker.

These events consistently draw some of the largest fields of the series, surpassing even the Main Event in terms of entries. Their popularity stems from their accessibility with lower buy-ins, weekend scheduling, multiple flights, and re-entry options. As expected, these beloved events returned for the 2024 edition of the series.

WSOP Event #5: $1,000 Mystery Millions

For aficionados of Mystery Bounties, the Mystery Millions is an unmissable tournament. Introduced in 2022, it quickly became a staple of the summer series, embracing the popular mystery bounty format. Last year marked a milestone as it emerged as the largest-ever $1,000 buy-in event, drawing over 18,000 entrants and amassing over $16 million prize pool.

In 2024, the event attracted 18,409 entries and generated the prize pool of $16.2 million. The first place prize of a cool million went to Malcolm Trayner.

WSOP Event #54: $1,500 Millionaire Maker

The Millionaire Maker stands as one of the most eagerly awaited events of the series and for good reasons. Since its inception in 2013, this tournament has consistently delivered on its promise of creating millionaires.

In 2024, the event attracted 10,939 runners, generating the prize pool of $14,603,565. The winner, Franco Spitale, took home just over $1,250,000.

WSOP Event #20: $300 Gladiators of Poker

Back by popular demand, the Gladiators of Poker returned for another run in 2024. This was the cheapest bracelet event to run on the schedule, costing just $300, and was also played as a multi-flight event, featuring four Day 1s.

Like its predecessor, it featured multiple Day 1s and boasts a rare guarantee — the 2024 edition maintained a $3 million prize pool assurance.

This guarantee was shattered as 20,647 entries generated the prize pool of over $5,000,000, and the winner, Stephen Winters, banked $401,200 – an insane amount for a $300 tournament.

WSOP Event #70: $400 Colossus

The Colossus, a fixture renowned for its large turnouts, features a wallet-friendly $400 buy-in. Despite a slight decline in popularity, it still draws over 15,000 runners, generating a prize pool exceeding $5 million.

In 2024, The Colossus once again met the expectations, drawing in 19,303 runners and creating the prize pool in excess of $6.3 million. Martin Alcaide, the winner, took home just over $500,000.

WSOP Event #38: $1,500 Monster Stack

The Monster Stack was another highly anticipated event for players seeking a shot at big prize pools. The event featured a $1500 buy-in and attracted a total of 8,703 entries for a prize pool of $11.6 million. Pedro Neves was the last man standing in this one, picking up $1.1 million for his efforts.

WSOP Payout Structure Changed for 2024

The WSOP made changes to its payout structure for the 2024 series. Most bracelet events offered a minimum cash prize of double the buy-in. For example, for a bracelet event with a $1,000 buy-in, the minimum cash prize for a player was $2,000.

A new Payout Calculator can be found on the WSOP website. The calculator allows players to see payouts for all bracelet events, in addition to daily and weekly deepstack events. If there are any changes to the payout structure for the 2025 WSOP, the calculator will be adjusted accordingly.

The Main Event was not part of the payout changes as it continued to offer players a minimum cash prize of 1.5x the buy-in. It maintained its payout structure for 15% of the field.

However, the WSOP tweaked how prize money was distributed to the final table players, due to criticisms made the prior year.

The first-place prize for the Main Event was reduced from $12 million to $10 million, while all players who reached the final table were guaranteed to walk away as a millionaire.

This is why the 2024 Main Event winner Jonathan Tamayo took home “just” $10,000,000 despite winning in the largest Main Event field in the history of the series.

WSOP 2024 Online Satellites and Qualifiers

There were various online satellites for the 2024 World Series of Poker running for months before the start.

Players who could play on WSOP Online (anyone in New Jersey, Michigan or Nevada) or WSOP PA (in Pennsylvania), including those just visiting — were able to take advantage of the daily qualifiers, where Main Event satellites were on offer for as little as $1.

WSOP 2024 Tournament of Champions

The WSOP Tournament of Champions (ToC) was an invitation-only event, boasting a $1 million freeroll prize pool. This event brought together all the winners from hallmark WSOP events. The champion not only won the cash prize but also received the coveted gold bracelet.

This year, ToC took place in Los Angeles, California. It was held from May 22 to May 24 at The Commerce Casino & Hotel, situated in the heart of Los Angeles.

The inception of the tournament dates back to 2004, witnessing several transformations over the years. Initial editions were marred by controversy, prompting a hiatus in 2007.

A brief resurgence occurred in 2010, featuring a 27-player format determined by public vote. However, the event went dormant once again following its conclusion. In 2022, ToC returned with a fresh format, extending invitations to all WSOPC ring winners and WSOP bracelet holders alike.

This tournament bears resemblance to the WSOP Global Casino Championship, formerly known as the WSOP National Championship, which also awards gold bracelets and boasts a minimum $1 million prize pool added by WSOP organizers. Held annually as the culmination of the circuit season, typically in August, the event grants hundreds of players automatic entry, free of charge.

Scott Seiver Becomes the WSOP 2024 Player of the Year

Scott Seiver won the coveted 2024 WSOP Player of the Year title. Despite tough competition and some great players performing very well, Seiver managed to pull off an important victory as he is approaching the age of eligibility for the Poker Hall of Fame.

Seiver won three WSOP bracelets in 2024, bringing his total count to seven. This, combined with two more final table appearances, was enough for Seiver to claim the POY title, finishing with 4,400 points, 600 more than the second-place Michael Rocco.

Each person entering multiple WSOP events can find themselves on the points hunt for the coveted title of Player of the Year. Points are awarded for open bracelet events, including online bracelets, but not for events like Casino Employees, Seniors, Super Seniors, Ladies, and Tag Team, which are excluded from the PoY race.

The Player of the Year winner receives a seat in the 2025 WSOP Main Event, a unique trophy, and a Player of the Year banner at Paris/Horseshoe.

Patrik Antonius Inducted into the WSOP Poker Hall of Fame

The Horseshoe is now also home to a one-of-a-kind World Series of Poker Hall of Fame Poker Room. It features 20 permanent poker tables plus a Poker Hall of Fame exhibit that pays tribute to poker legends.

In 2024, the honor went to Patrik Antonius, a player who certainly ticks all the boxes, being one of the most iconic names in the poker world, consistently winning in cash games and tournaments and holding his own against some of the best players in the world.
