Who Is the Best Poker Player in the World in 2024?

The answer depends on how you define “best.” In 2024, Jonathan Tamayo became the official 2024 World Champion by winning the WSOP Main Event, while David Coleman was crowned the GPI Poker Player of the Year for overall consistency, and Jeremy Ausmus won the PGT Player of the Year award.

The 2024 World Champion: Jonathan Tamayo

Jonathan Tamayo, a 38-year-old professional from Humble, Texas, topped a record-breaking field of 10,112 entrants to win the 2024 World Series of Poker Main Event.

Key Fact Detail
Prize Money $10,000,000
Total Prize Pool $94,041,600 (largest live poker prize pool ever)
Winning Hand 8♦ 3♠
Final Opponent Jordan Griff (2nd place, $6,000,000)

Tamayo defeated Griff in an epic heads-up match, holding on with two pair after the board ran out an ace and five to become the 2024 World Champion.

The Overall Player of the Year: David Coleman

While Tamayo won the biggest title, David Coleman from Livingston, New Jersey, demonstrated the most consistency across all tournaments in 2024:

Statistic Coleman’s 2024 Performance
GPI Player of the Year Won the award
POY Points 9,698 (ranked 1 in North America)
Tournament Titles 5
Final Tables 24
Total Winnings $4,737,165

Coleman also won the most weeks at GPI #1 in the overall rankings, showcasing sustained dominance throughout the year.

PGT Player of the Year: Jeremy Ausmus

For Professional Poker Tour (PGT) specific performance, Jeremy Ausmus topped the 2024 leaderboard:

  • 2 wins and 27 cashes on the PGT
  • $6,491,016 in PGT earnings
  • Most weeks at GPI #1 in 2024: Jesse Lonis

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for the official world champion, it’s Jonathan Tamayo — he won poker’s biggest prize and the coveted WSOP bracelet. But if you want the player who performed best across all tournaments in 2024, David Coleman holds that title as GPI Player of the Year.

Poker doesn’t have a single “best player” ranking like sports with win-loss records. Tournament poker is volatile, and different players excel in different formats — making 2024’s top performers stand out in their own categories.
