Jonathan Tamayo Wins WSOP 2024 Main Event for $10 Million!
Jonathan Tamayo, a 38-year-old poker player from Humble, Texas, won the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event and took home the championship bracelet plus a massive $10,000,000 first-place prize. This win made him the 2024 World Series of Poker Main Event champion after he topped a record-breaking field of 10,112 entrants, which was the largest WSOP Main Event in history.
The tournament was the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event World Championship and it created a total prize pool of $94,041,600, which became the largest live poker tournament prize pool ever in poker history. The Main Event started on July 3, 2024, and the champion was decided on July 17, 2024, after players competed through multiple days of intense poker action.
Tamayo defeated Jordan Griff in a dramatic 65-hand heads-up match that lasted through Wednesday night, and on the decisive 235th final table hand Tamayo won with 8♦ 3♠ when he flopped two pair while Griff held top pair with 9-6. Tamayo entered the final table in seventh place, and only one player had won from that seventh-place position before – Pius Heinz in 2011, so Tamayo’s climb from seventh to champion was a rare and impressive achievement.
The final table featured seven players who each won at least $1 million, with Tamayo taking $10,000,000, Griff winning $6,000,000 for second place, Sweden’s Niklas Astedt getting $4,000,000 for third, Canada’s Jason Sagle winning $3,000,000 for fourth, and Bulgaria’s Boris Angelov taking $2,500,000 for fifth place. This guaranteed every final table player a million-dollar prize, making it one of the most lucrative final tables in WSOP history.
Tamayo’s victory continued the streak of American WSOP Main Event winners since Daniel Weinman won the 2023 title and took $12,100,000, meaning the United States has won the Main Event for two years running. The 2024 event also marked that every single one of the 10,112 entrants walked away with real prize money, with the minimum payout of $15,000 going to players like defending champion Weinman who finished 1,357th.
