Who Is the 2024 Poker World Champion? Jonathan Tamayo’s WSOP Main Event Win

PokerWsop 2024Jonathan Tamayo 🕒 2 🗒️ 348

Jonathan Tamayo is the player recognized as the world champion of poker in 2024 after winning the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. He took down the title in July 2024 at Horseshoe Las Vegas, where the iconic tournament drew a record‑breaking 10,112 entrants, making it the largest field in Main Event history at that time. By surviving that massive field and reaching the final table, Tamayo earned the right to be called the year’s world champion of poker.

The 2024 WSOP Main Event paid out a total of $93.5 million across the money places, with the top prize set at $10 million. Tamayo’s first‑place win was the biggest single score in WSOP Main Event history, surpassing the $8.9 million prize from the previous year. On the final table, he entered with only about 20 big blinds, but steadily improved his stack and finished the tournament with around 308 big blinds by the time he clinched the bracelet. His journey showed not just skill, but strong reads, discipline, and resilience under pressure.

Tamayo’s final opponent was Jordan Griff, a fellow professional who had built a strong late‑stage run. The heads‑up battle went back and forth, with both players trading big swings and high‑stakes decisions. Tamayo ultimately secured the win with a decisive hand, capturing the title amid a live crowd and a global TV audience. The win moved him above $13 million in total recorded tournament earnings, placing him among the top earners in poker history and giving him the WSOP Main Event win that many consider the crown jewel of the game.

Beyond the cash prize, becoming the 2024 WSOP Main Event champion brings prestige and recognition across the poker world. Tamayo, from Humble, Texas, became the first player with a WSOP gold bracelet and a large live tournament win in the same year, further cementing his status. The 2024 title also continued the tradition of the WSOP Main Event winner being treated as that year’s de facto world champion, a role that has been around since the 1970s and remains central to the sport’s lore.
